Wikipedia says about the Red Hot Poker:“Kniphofia (also called Tritoma, Red hot poker, Torch lily or Poker plant, is a genus of plants in the family Xanthorrhoeaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae,[2] that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used horticulturally and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers.”These plants produce spikes of upright, brightly-colored, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them. The flowers produce copious nectar while blooming and may attract sap-suckers such as hummingbirds and New World orioles. The Kniphofia genus is named after Johann Hieronymus Kniphof,[3] an 18th century German physician and botanist. It doesn’t mention how my lovely (true West TX gal) neighbor, Carolyn grows then with such ease on the west side of her property. It doesn’t mention my envy of her for her tenacity and knowledge of the plant and animal kingdom. I halfheartedly tried to grow some once. I fell into the “oh anybody can grow them” trap. My efforts were rewarded with, well they resulted in exactly the effort I put into them. Nada.So I stole a photo of her lovely specimens. You reap what you sow on your journey††††nada te turbe††††jim
