We have Crocuses (or Croci), NOT!
As I was mowing the other day, I found what I falsely believed to be Crocuses abloom amongst the yard. At first I thought them a weed or a wild onion. They seem to come very randomly with no rhyme or reason. One has to assume the reason to be for our pleasure. Then in doing some research, I found them not at all to be Crocuses.
“There is a fall flower that looks very much like the crocus and is mistaken for crocus called colchicum (Kohl-Chick-Um). It is actually part of the Lily family (Liliaceae) and has 6 stamen as do Lillies. If you ever wonder–crocus or colchicum–just count the stamen–three equals crocus, six equals colchicum.”
I was all ready to paste in Emily Dickinson’s poem about the Crocus, but now it does not apply.
So just enjoy the image…monos en theos…†…jim
