A cactus of many names, most of them negative sounding. But it produces a fruit that is attractive to deer, rabbits, and other small rodents. My dogs always go a little crazy trying to follow all the scent trails that lead from these lovely low-lying beauties.

The horse crippler cactus is broader than it is long. Normally it is 1–2 inches above the ground and up to 12 inches across. It is difficult to see, and many horses have been crippled from stepping on it. It usually has only 1 stem, occasionally 2 or 3. If injured at the tip, it may produce a cluster of small heads on top of the old one. The surface of the plant is dark green. It has about 14 spines at each areole, with a central spine that is longer and stronger than the others, 2– 3 inches long and straight to slightly-curved downward. The inverted bell-shaped flowers are 1– 2 3/4 inches across and about as tall. The outer petals are salmon-red, the inner ones salmon-pink with streaks of red. The edge of the petals has a feathery appearance. Anthers are pinkish to red, and the pistil is yellow to pink. The flower is somewhat fragrant.

Some days, I question what the hell am I planting ?

What am I growing?

Do I even produce fruit from which to be judged?

Sometimes it feels that the best option is to grow nothing and then, do you avoid being judged?

Peace out, Praying for a calm week and to at least prepare the soil. ††† en theos ††† jim

apple paint w text

Yesterday I came across this thought provoking quote via one of my daily devotionals. As one who has a constant struggle with the spiritual nature and meaning of seeds & fruits, gates & doors and paths & roads, this simple saying struck a deep blow to my mind. I just had to create an image to go with it.

Ken Kesey was the author of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest“. He had many seeds, roads & weeds within him. You can read a short bio of him here: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7285.Ken_Kesey

“What Kesey’s quotation about apples and seeds says to us about perspective is absolutely beautiful in its simple truth:  there’s no way of knowing the extent of the potential in anything, really, and something like an apple seed can give us years and years of bountiful harvests, with uncounted apples. People are the same way, of course.  There’s no telling what’s inside each person that we meet, no telling the potential that each person has for growth and for doing exceptional things.  Just like the apple seed, though, our potential is realized by creating just the right conditions for our growth and development.  Just as the apple cannot thrive in dry, barren climes, so is it difficult for us to thrive in situations that are not fitting.” ©Walsh, Tom:  Living Life Fully’s Daily Meditations, Year One. So, what is the moral of this to you ?

We pass this vine that grows by a dumpster on our daily walking route. It always seemingly speaks to me on the expression of “dying on the vine”. Sometimes we die before we ever get a chance to produce fruit. How a plant can seemingly have life and death on the same branch?“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.” (John 15:1-8)Don’t die before you even bear fruit on your journey†nada te turbe†jim
