Back in the day, I spent a lot of time in front of the telly. Not so much now. I have 192 channels and few worth watching.
I was a big fan of Hill Street Blues. This was ironic as I was of the mindset that paranoia was defined by seeing a police car in your rear view mirror.
Watching the bond of a group of men fighting against prejudice and bureaucracy just hit a chord with me. It ignited the unknown feelings of men relating other men that I had never known. A squad of white officers in a mostly black and hispanic neighborhood made for such dicey drama.
And then to hear the calm yet ever so strong voice of Michael Conrad as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus doing the cop roll call, always closing it off with his signature line: “Let’s be careful out there.” Well it just made my day.
